Glazing for Gas Firing (Bring Your Own Bisc-Ware), March 2025

£45.00

If you’re interested in gas firing to high temperature (Orton Cone 9-10) and the effects of the reduction atmosphere made possible by live-flame firing that can’t be achieved in electric kilns, this workshop will serve as an ideal introduction.

A palette of tried and tested glazes developed for gas firing will be made available, including celadon, tenmoku and shino glazes. Just bring along your own bisc-fired pieces to glaze, which will then be fired in the Kiln Yard at Yorkshire Artspace’s Persistence Works site. Any questions you may have about gas firing will be answered by a knowledgeable tutor, and if you are interested in observing/taking part in the firing itself you will be welcome to do so.

The gas firing will take place during the week following the glazing session. The specific firing date, and details for collection of work after firing, will be given during the session.

The session includes one unit of space in the kiln, which can be chosen on the day. Space is available in units measuring:

Option 1: 18” x 10” x 5.5” (width x depth x height): Half-shelf with enough height for bowls, mugs etc.

Option 2: 9” x 10” x 11” (width x depth x height): Quarter-shelf with extra height for taller pieces such as vases.

If more space is required it can be purchased on the day at £30 per unit, which includes all glazing costs. To avoid disappointment, please check that pieces brought to the glazing session will fit into the space provided, as any overspill will require the purchase of an additional unit.

All glazing materials and equipment are provided. Class capacity is limited to 8 participants to ensure that ample individual attention and material/equipment availability can be given. Pieces brought for glazing should be made of a clay that can withstand high temperatures, ie. stoneware or porcelain, and must be biscuit-fired (typically in the region of 1000C). If in doubt please feel free to check ahead of the session.

Please ensure that a valid email address is provided when booking, as this will be used to confirm the booking and to provide updates ahead of the course if necessary. If you don’t receive a confirmation email upon booking please check your spam/junk folder. Please refer to the Location and Policies pages before making a booking.
